Felt VR Series
Felt has done it.
Felt Bicycles now makes the ultimate performance bike for the indecisive.
Part of a broad trend to make high-performance road bikes more versatile, these VR series bikes are amazing. They’re stable (and geared low enough) to tour on, tough enough (and equipped with rack and fender mounts) so you can commute with them, and fast enough to race.
Starting under $1000 for the aluminum-frame VR60 and topping out with the $5400 carbon-fiber VR2 with Ultegra electronic equipment, there are 8 levels of supremely capable and comfortable performance from which to pick.
What makes these bikes so versatile is a combination of frame materials, frame geometry and component picks.
The bikes are super light like any good racing bike thanks to hydroformed butted aluminum on the sub-$2000 models and high-level carbon fiber construction on the more expensive models. The frame geometry (taller head tube, mid-length wheelbase, slack head angle) gives you stable handling without losing the racing-bike snap. The wide 28mm to 35mm road tires deliver all-day comfort and extra flat protection, and the sub-compact gearing (cranksets with 30 tooth small and 46 tooth big chainrings) make pack touring and steep hill riding possible. Although every version has disc brakes (which add weight), the entry-level VR60 is only 22 pounds, and most of the carbon-fiber versions tip the scales between 17 and 19 pounds!
