S & S Travel Couplings

Most metal bikes can be travel bikes just by adding couplers

The easiest way to beat expensive baggage fees when you travel with your bike is to get a take-apart bike.  Besides the Ritchey Breakaway bikes that we carry, you can get a number of different bikes outfitted with S & S travel couplings.

S & S couplers are ingenious little frame joints that can be built into a new bike (or welded into a bike you already have) so that you can break the bike down into a more compact size for travelling.  Bikes with S & S couplers can be broken down and reassembled by even the most mechanically inept cyclist with just a couple of small hand tools.  If you are concerned about your ability to pack and unpack your bike, we even offer a hands-on bike class so you can travel with confidence.

If you are buying a new frame from us, the travel coupling option adds between $1000 to $1600 to the cost of the frame, depending on the brand and materials involved.   Inglis and Surly have models with S & S couplers, or we can suggest a few builders that have the ability to add them to your existing bike.

We have a variety of hardshell suitcases available for your travel bike made by Samsonite, and softshell cases (our preference) from Ritchey.
