Snow Daze
Well, wasn’t that fun! A mad dash to the grocery store to stock up on the storm essentials (beer, coffee, burrito fixings and a few extra batteries if you’re like us). Eight inches of snow, followed by five more the next day followed by another five the next… Enough to bring everything in the region to a grinding halt. No school, no going to work, not many visitors at the bike shop. A whole week trapped in the house with your family. Not a lot of snow by most standards, but way more than Seattle can handle.
Our friend Kiel was back in town after racing in Australia, with two weeks to go before a race in the United Arab Emirates. He’s home to train. It’s easy to wrap your brain around school closures and days off of “regular” work due to snow. Guess what happens to professional bike racers who can’t ride outside…and then the power goes off so that their fancy indoor trainer won’t work either… The coach calls and says “Get on a plane to Arizona right now!”
In our house, cabin fever really took hold. Jaime coped well, but I left Minnesota for a reason! Jigsaw puzzles didn’t cut it, and playing (or shoveling) outside was only fun for short periods.
As an aside, doesn’t anyone else on this island own a shovel? Where I come from, the sidewalk in front of your house or business is your responsibility to clear.
Snowmaggedon 2019 is over. Finally we can all go out for a bike ride!
