1985 Guerciotti Record
This is another bike with a secret identity.
We’ve already highlighted a Gitane that was made by Vitus. You probably thought that the Huffy made by Ben Serotta was pretty cool. The Italian Viner labeled as a Japanese Nishiki looked like a great bike, and some of the best Schwinns ever produced were relabeled Panasonics or Wastyn cycles in disguise.
Guerciotti, like a lot of Italian bike brands in the 1970’s and ‘80’s, turned to Alan if they wanted to offer a lightweight aluminum or carbon fiber bike.
Founded in 1972, Alan was a bike company that wanted to try new things, right from the onset. First of all, the name on the frame wasn’t the builder’s surname like contemporaries Guerciotti, Colnago, DeRosa, Mondonico, etc.. Alan was a mashup of Falconi Lodovici’s kid’s names: Alberto and Anna Maria. Second, Falconi wanted to build really lightweight racing bikes out of aluminum (and later carbon fiber), not steel. There wasn’t any welding going on in the Alan workshop, everything was glued together. Lastly, Alan bicycles had no problem selling their frames to or being contract builders for other brands. Guerciotti, Colnago, DeRosa, Dazzan, Torelli, and Olmo all had aluminum or carbon models made by Alan at one point or another.
So this is a small-diameter aluminum frame. It’s a fair amount lighter than the steel ‘85 Guerciotti models and a little bit more flexible, so you’re looking at a nice and comfortable racing bike. It’s outfitted with Campagnolo parts ranging from a ‘78 Nuovo Record front derailleur to ‘85 and ‘86 Super Record parts to Campy Chorus shifters and cranks from 1990 to the newest version C Record brakes from about ‘92. There are Look ski-binding style pedals from ‘87 and the timeless style of a San Marco Rolls saddle and Cinelli bars & stem.
You may have noticed that this 1985 model has been sorted into our “1986 to 2000” museum section. Since the frame is outfitted with newer parts from the late ‘80’s and early ‘90’s this selection seemed appropriate.
Of course any bike that’s using an alias is probably lying about its age a bit too…
