Trek carbon road bikes were used to win or at least make the podium in eleven Tours de France.  We all know that the racers (and sometimes their doctors) did the work, but they required bicycles with certain features.  The bikes needed to be comfortable enough to spend six hours a day riding.  They had to be light and aerodynamic.  Great handling was a must, as nobody would want to go down mountain roads on sketchy bikes. The Trek 5500 met all of the requirements for some elite bike racers, and it was (and probably still is) the right formula for a weekend warrior looking to go faster with less effort.

This 5500 was new in 1997. It was my bike, and I had it custom painted this yellow to match my County Cycles team kit. It originally had a Trek carbon fork that was painted to match, but when the Cinelli one-piece handlebar & stem came on the scene I had to have one, and the old fork required an old-fashioned quill stem…. So out went the Trek fork, in came the Reynolds Ouzo Pro threadless carbon fork along with the super-cool Cinelli Integralter bars.

The bike is in great shape, features mostly Shimano Dura-Ace components along with a Cinelli Integralter handlebar & stem combo and Mavic Kserium Elite wheels. There are new tires, fresh cables, new handlebar tape and a Selle Italia Novus saddle. It’s a 54cm size and will fit a rider between 5’6” and 5’9” the best. Brand new it would have run around $3600. You can get it for a third of that amount now, only $1299.
