If you’ve perused our museum section, you may have admired a lot of our vintage bikes and wondered why they don’t make bikes “like that” anymore.

They do. For one, Bianchi makes a city bike model called the Milano, a more performance-oriented hybrid bike that gives you the beautiful elements of an older bike but in a lighter and more efficient package. With the Milano you get a light aluminum frame, powerful (but still traditional looking) V brakes, wide-range gears with a derailleur shift system and light-weight modern (not steel) fenders.

Leave it to Bianchi, the oldest bike company in existence, to offer a stylish alternative to Giant/Trek/Specialized’s boring city bikes.

They couldn’t come in anything other than Bianchi’s signature celeste color.

90’s Vintage Bianchi

59cm Bianchi SBX steel road bike $1399

This is a nice riding early ‘90’s steel road bike built up with mostly new parts.

The 59cm frame is built from Columbus SBX tubing, which I believe was a custom request from Bianchi, perhaps somewhat similar ride characteristics to the more common Columbus SLX pipes. The chrome fork has a sloping crown, designed for aerodynamics and a typical element for a 1990’s bike.

All of the components on this bike are Italian, and most of them are brand new.

The frame is outfitted with a 2023 Campagnolo Centaur parts kit complimented by a Centaur carbon fiber crankset from around 2006. You get 3TTT Bianchi-labeled stem and handlebars, 25c Vittoria tires and new Campagnolo Khamsin wheels.

This is a large 59cm bike, and it will be a good choice for a rider between 5’10” and 6’1” tall.
It comes with a free tune-up after a few months of riding and a 1-year warranty.

You can call it a gravel bike, but this one is for roadways and trails made of asphalt, gravel, cobblestones, dirt, wooden boards, bricks or cement.

The 40mm wide tires will feel stable and squishy (yet still pretty fast) regardless of the road surface. The wide but shallow drop bars should make you feel comfortable and in control wherever you roll, and the Shimano GRX components should work well enough that you forget about the parts on your bike and just enjoy the ride.

When you look at all of the options out there in high-performance gravel bikes, sometimes it’s hard not to get a little sleepy.

Every brand seems to have a Shimano GRX equipped carbon gravel bike. They all have swept-out drop bars, 47mm wide WTB tires, dropped seatstays that meet the seat tube just above the spot where a front derailleur used to go, water bottle cage bolts in seven or eight different spots on the bike, color options limited to matte black and “sand”. The worst part has to be the names. The names have to be all about getting back to some rural fantasy that seems completely at odds with the high-tech-hi-fidelity nature of the bike in question. The Wheat Thresher. Birch Rambler. Corn Husk. Gravel Roam. Dirt Wanderer.

This Bianchi will keep you awake. It’s blocky like a (super aerodynamic) robot. The signature celeste color has been an attention grabber for at least 80 years. The electronic shifting makes cool servo-motor sounds. They named it Arcadex! I don’t even know what that means! Exciting!

These bikes are actually time machines.

They don’t go into the future but a Bianchi E-Road will transport you backwards in time by twenty years.

Remember how fast you were twenty years ago? Remember taking on 60-mile rides, not having touched your bike in the preceding two weeks? Remember being able to do lots of random activities on a Sunday afternoon (without complaining about your knees) even though you did 45 fast miles in the morning? If you enjoyed riding a road bike back then, throw a leg over an electric Bianchi and hit the button on the top tube so you can relive the experience.

How does Bianchi do it? They put a 250-watt Mahle hub motor on a couple of models and stuff a bunch of batteries inside one of their carbon fiber aero framesets. They outfit the bike with Vittoria tires, Shimano Ultegra or 105 Di2 components including hydraulic disc brakes (we didn’t have those twenty years ago!), Vision aero wheels and cockpit components made by FSA.

The system can be operated simply with the single button on the top tube (toggle through low, medium and high settings with a colored LED to show state of charge) or the motor can be controlled via an app on your phone or Garmin computer. You can customize the assist system, providing a little bit of help or a lot. You can even program it by doctor’s orders: setting the motor to kick in whenever your heart rate reaches a certain threshold.

These are fun bikes. I ride the pictured E-Aria, which is a couple of model years old now. The new versions are based on the Oltre carbon bike (so very similar to this Aria) and the aluminum Impulso model. These aren’t 65-pound mopeds with wheelbarrow tires. These are high-performance road bikes that rides well with or without the motor turned on. They handle great, look like a bike should look and weigh less than 25 pounds.

Note: These bikes are not recommended for riders under the age of thirty as twenty years of time travel might actually require the use of a tricycle or training wheels.
