Does anyone make a decent racing bike out of steel anymore?

You bet.

Ritchey makes a beautiful steel road bike out of their Logic tubing, and it’s just right. Not too cheap (and heavy), not too pretty (so you’d be afraid to really ride it), not too expensive. The Road Logic frame with headset and carbon fork will set you back about $1250. That’s just the right range for replacing an old road frame that’s damaged or doesn’t fit right , and you don’t have to resort to buying something sketchy and used. A Road Logic all built up with new parts will typically run between $2000 and $4500, and it will be the sweetest ride, with handling and comfort that is just right.

Take the legendary and inspiring handling of a hand-built Ritchey bicycle. Add a revolutionary coupling system that allows you to pack it and travel around the world with ease. The result is the ultimate travel bike: The Ritchey Break-Away. A full size bike in a case that measures a scant 9″ x 26″ x 29″!

The Break-Away bike disassembles and assembles in minutes and comes complete with a travel bag. Ritchey custom steel and carbon fiber tubesets and the patented compression coupling system are the keys to this design. The frame is securely joined at the seatpost in two places and on the downtube. The coupler clamps unobtrusively around small flanges on the downtube. While this system is as secure as systems much larger it adds less than 100 grams.

Ritchey Break-Away frames are available in custom heat treated cromoly tubing and carbon fiber. Frame sets are available in road or cyclocross frame styles in a broad range of sizes. Purchase as a complete bike or as a frameset with carbon fork, headset, cable couplers & deluxe travel case.

Tom Ritchey has been designing fantastic bicycles for about 40 years now. In that time, Tom has managed to squeeze every drop of performance out of the materials he has at hand. Finally turning his attention to carbon fiber, Tom has built a winner.
The Breakaway Carbon has made Classic Cycle’s (Paul and Gavin’s) top 3 road bikes of all time list (along with the Colnago C60 and the Fuji Gran Fondo).
It rides great, is extremely comfortable, looks awesome, and seems to be tough as nails.
For about $3000 you can get the frame, fork, headset and suitcase. Complete bikes can be built up between $4000 and $7000.

As an added benefit, this bike easily packs down into a regular size suitcase (which is included with the frameset) so you can take it with you when you go on vacation. Awesome.
