Kiel Reijnen’s Trek Time Trial Bike

While we have this bike on display we have to make sure that the tires are flat or that the brakes drag. Otherwise, a bike this fast and aerodynamic is likely to just roll out the door under its own power.

This is the Trek-Segafredo team issue bike. It’s built for our friend Kiel Reijnen to slip through the wind and convert every last watt of his athletic power into forward motion. Designing a bike like this requires a lot of computer modeling and a fair amount of time in a wind tunnel.

All of the things that are normally bolted onto a bicycle frame are tucked away on this machine. The front brake hides inside the fork. Cables and shift wires run inside the tubing. On the front end it’s hard to figure out where the frame ends and the headset, the fork, or the handlebar begins. The carbon fiber frame and handlebar is carefully constructed in truncated airfoil shapes, designed to be as aerodynamic as possible while staying within the UCI’s design rules.
Speaking of rules, one of the rules regarding these bikes is that the front end of the saddle has to be positioned at least 5 centimeters behind the center of the cranks. In order to get as far forward on the bike without running afoul of this saddle position rule, the seat is an extra short Bontrager Hilo model.

We don’t want Kiel to get into any trouble, so we should mention that this bike isn’t exactly sponsor-correct. The Trek-Segafredo team rides these bikes outfitted with Bontrager rear disc wheels and Aeolus carbon front wheels. The Hed 3 spoke wheels in the picture are ours.

Want to cut a few minutes off of your commute or an hour off your Seattle-to-Portland ride time? This team bike is essentially a customized Trek Speed Concept triathlon bike, so you can ride one just like it if you really need to get somewhere fast.
